Suki Cai

Suki (Yufei) is a 4th-year student majoring in Computer Science combined Statistics. She has a great passion for making contributions to society and aspiring to benefit people from her work and research, continuously finding a way to build a better world for the disabled. She joined the Early Detection Research Group through the UBC work-learn program under the supervised of Dr. Rasika Rajapakshe. A fun fact about her is that she has long hair which is more than 1-meter long.

Dr. Hua Shen

Biostatistician

Dr. Hua Shen is an assistant professor of biostatistics at the University of Calgary. Her research interests are on the methodology development and statistical analysis of data arising from public health and medical research. They include the analysis of survival data, recurrent events data, longitudinal data, incomplete data and other complex data involving multiple outcomes, misclassification/measurement error, hierarchical structures and high dimension. She is strongly interested in collaborative research to support investigations in cancer and other chronic diseases.

Emily Mayzes

I am going to be going into the last year of my undergraduate degree this upcoming year and will be graduating in April with my Bachelors in Science with a major in Psychology and minor in Computer Science. I have always been interested in working in the medical field, and after I graduate I hope to continue on to medical school. Currently, I am working on the project entitled ‘Exception handling in Deep Learning application in breast cancer detection using mammography’. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, baking, and exploring the beautiful Okanagan on hikes and bike rides.

I always want to apply what I learned in school to industry fields. I always keep curiosity about learning new things in data science and the machine learning field.

Nitchakan Tara Obma

  • NLP for automated extraction of canncer diagnosis from pathology reports

Nitchakan was born in Khon Kaen, Thailand. She came to Canada for secondary school and university. She joined the Early Detection Research Group in the summer of 2022 to work on the data analysis pipeline. She has always been interested in working and doing research in the medical-related field but never would have thought about working on the technological side of it. Nitchakan is excited to join the Early Detection Research Group. She is eager to learn about the construction of a data pipeline and contribute to something that could benefit others. Unfortunately, Nitchakan is not much of a winter person  and most of her hobbies revolve around the summer which includes anything from scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, trekking to mountain biking.

Johnson Chen

Johnson (Tingyu) is a 3rd-year UBC student studying Statistics and Computer Science. In May 2022, Johnson proudly joined the Image Curation group as a summer research student, and is assisting Dr. Rasika Rajapakshe and the team. Johnson is looking forward to facing the challenges ahead, one line of code at a time. Like many sweet-toothed people, Johnson spends his spare time in dessert places, gym, and then repeats.

Outside of school, she enjoys baking, creative arts, reading and spending time by the beach.

Liying was born in China, Guangzhou, she came to Canada for high school and university as an international student. Liying joined the Early Detection Research Group in the spring of 2022 after she graduated as a computer science student. Her past research experience has been in children’s robotics; however, she had a strong interest in the medical field. She hopes she can take the advantage of technology and use them in the medical field.

Pengkun Liang

Pengkun graduated from Ucalgary as a master student majoring in Statistics this summer and is currently working on the breast density AI prediction project. He is proficient in R/SAS programming and data analysis. He is also a huge fan of video games.
