Emily Mayzes

I am going to be going into the last year of my undergraduate degree this upcoming year and will be graduating in April with my Bachelors in Science with a major in Psychology and minor in Computer Science. I have always been interested in working in the medical field, and after I graduate I hope to continue on to medical school. Currently, I am working on the project entitled ‘Exception handling in Deep Learning application in breast cancer detection using mammography’. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, baking, and exploring the beautiful Okanagan on hikes and bike rides.

Nitchakan Tara Obma

  • NLP for automated extraction of canncer diagnosis from pathology reports

Nitchakan was born in Khon Kaen, Thailand. She came to Canada for secondary school and university. She joined the Early Detection Research Group in the summer of 2022 to work on the data analysis pipeline. She has always been interested in working and doing research in the medical-related field but never would have thought about working on the technological side of it. Nitchakan is excited to join the Early Detection Research Group. She is eager to learn about the construction of a data pipeline and contribute to something that could benefit others. Unfortunately, Nitchakan is not much of a winter person  and most of her hobbies revolve around the summer which includes anything from scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, trekking to mountain biking.

Johnson Chen

Johnson (Tingyu) is a 3rd-year UBC student studying Statistics and Computer Science. In May 2022, Johnson proudly joined the Image Curation group as a summer research student, and is assisting Dr. Rasika Rajapakshe and the team. Johnson is looking forward to facing the challenges ahead, one line of code at a time. Like many sweet-toothed people, Johnson spends his spare time in dessert places, gym, and then repeats.

Isha comes from Mumbai, India. She received her bachelor degree in Information Technology at University of Mumbai, 2021. She is an incoming student this summer UBCO in MSc. Computer Science. Having a keen interest in women’s health and Artificial Intelligence, she is excited to work at BC Cancer. Outside of school, she enjoys baking, creative arts, reading and spending time by the beach.

Liying Yang

Liying was born in China, Guangzhou, she came to Canada for high school and university as an international student. Liying joined the Early Detection Research Group in the spring of 2022 after she graduated as a computer science student. Her past research experience has been in children’s robotics; however, she had a strong interest in the medical field. She hopes she can take the advantage of technology and use them in the medical field.

Pengkun Liang

Pengkun graduated from Ucalgary as a master student majoring in Statistics this summer and is currently working on the breast density AI prediction project. He is proficient in R/SAS programming and data analysis. He is also a huge fan of video games.

I come from China and have studied Computer Science since my first year in Canada. Machine Learning is one of the cool topics that I’m interested in and I find it has great potential use in medical/health-caring area. I’m so excited and proud to join this group and work with all the talents to contribute my effort and explore the endless possibilities!

I enjoy tasting delicious food from different places, playing tennis and singing. I’m a cat-person and I love creative and unique ideas 😀

Tien Do

Biology major & Data Science minor, UBCO

Tien was born and raised in Vung Tau City, Vietnam. She came to Kelowna for an undergraduate degree at UBC Okanagan. She recently shows interests in Data Science, specifically in Data Analytics and Machine Learning with medical applications. She is excited to join Early Detection group this summer to work on the project validation of AI models for identifying breast cancer in screening mammograms as a recipient of SSRP. In her freetime, she enjoys hiking, rock climbing, baking, and painting.

Olivia Ireland

  • Radiation Induced Cardiac Toxicities in Breast Cancer Survivors

Olivia grew up in Penticton, BC, and is currently a second-year undergraduate at UBC Okanagan studying Medical Biochemistry and Psychology. She is an incoming student this summer at BC Cancer in the UBC Faculty of Medicine Summer Student Research Program. Having a keen interest in women’s health and cancer epidemiology, Olivia is excited to work alongside Dr. Sarah Lucas and Dr. Rasika Rajapakshe on a project that will analyze a correlation between radiation treatment and subsequent coronary artery disease. Outside of school and research, she enjoys Irish dancing, creative arts, and enjoying the great outdoors.
