Brittany Boorman

B.Sc. Physiology, McGill 2013

2014 – 2015

After finishing her degree in 2013, Brittany returned home to Kelowna to complete a year of Psychology at UBC Okanagan while working in a health psychology lab. In July 2014, she was then hired on as the research intern for the PREDICT project at the BC Cancer Agency. This project is a biobanking and permission-to-contact initiative which supports global cancer research, and is sponsored by the BC Cancer Foundation. 

Her pastimes include travelling and spending time outside, mainly hiking and swimming. She also plans on pursuing a career in medicine.

Christine Haslock

Christine graduated from UBCO in April 2014 with a degree in Biology. With the support of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Student Summer Research Program, Christine joined the Early Detection Group in the summer of 2014 to work on extracting time to care and pathology data for the development of a lung cancer surgical outcomes database.

Duncan Szarmes

B.Sc. with Honours in Computer Science, UBCO 2015

  • Patient-Linac Collision Detection Tool for Radiation Therapy

Duncan has completed his Bachelor’s Degree with Honours in Computer Science at UBC Okanagan. He took a Medical Imaging course taught by Dr. Rasika Rajapakshe and Dr. Cynthia Araujo in his third year and in the summer of 2014 began working in the Early Detection lab. Duncan has worked alongside radaition therapists and planners to create collision detection software to prevent collisions between the radiation treatment machine and patients, and his honors thesis focused on the visualization of breast cancer outcomes in BC. Outside of work Duncan enjoys many sports, including soccer and surfing when he visits his home town in Hawaii, and playing guitar.

Eric Nelson

B.Sc. Computer Science / Mathematics, UBCO 2018

  • Patient-Linac Collision Detection Tool for Radiation Therapy

Eric is a 4th year Computer Science and Math student at UBCO. Before studying at UBCO he completed an Electronic Engineering Technology diploma. He joined the Early Detection group in 2016 and is working alongside radiation therapists and planners to improve and distribute a collection of external beam radiation treatment planning software. Outside of work Eric enjoys beach volleyball, thinkin’ bout nothing, edible cricket farming, web development, volunteering, and petting cute dogs

Marc Jutras

Bachelor of Business Administration, joint major in Psychology, SFU 2014

Projects:

  • Development of Ultra-High Resolution CT for Differential Diagnosis of Lung Nodules Found Using Low Dose CT

Marc completed his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree at Simon Fraser University in 2014, with a joint major in Psychology. He began studies as a medical student in the MD program at UBC’s Southern Medical Program in Kelowna, BC in September 2014, and joined the BCCA in the summer of 2014. He is currently involved in a project involving the development of ultra-high Resolution CT for the differential diagnosis of lung nodules. In his spare time, he enjoys remaining active and enjoying the beautiful Kelowna scenery by hiking, running, and doing anything he can outdoors.

Samantha Gottfred

B.Sc. Microbiology (Honours), UBCO 2014

2014 – 2015

Samantha was hired at the BCCA to initiate two projects: BioLym (Biology of Lymphoid Cancer) and TTR (Tumour Tissue Repository). BioLym was successfully launched in August 2014. TTR is still currently under construction. These projects are tumour bio-banking initiatives that give patients the opportunity to participate in cancer research by donating their tumour tissue and a blood samples.

Outside the office, Samantha enjoys yoga, dance, golf, and downhill skiing. One day she hopes to graduate form medical school and start her own practice, maybe even as an oncologist!

Ali Silver

  • Development of a Natural History Model for Breast Cancer using CADe/CADx

During Ali’s undergraduate years in Biology at the University of Victoria, she was involved in research comparing types and outcomes of laparoscopic hysterectomies in a general gynaecological unit. She was accepted to the UBC Faculty of Medicine at the southern Medical Program (SMP) in Kelowna, and has thoroughly enjoyed her first year. Ali was privileged to be accepted for the Summer Student Research Program, receiving the Pritchard Scholarship to work on a project for the Early Detection team. Ali is overjoyed to be living in the sunny Okanagan, spending her free time hiking, swimming, and visiting the world-class wineries.

Bhavan Panghali

  • Integration of a Web-Based Follow-Up Platform into the BC Cancer Agency for Improving Quality of Life Care and Research

Raised in small town Merritt, Bhavan moved to Kelowna, where she now calls home, to attend UBC Okanagan. She graduated with her BSc in Microbiology in 2016 and is excited to return to UBC in the Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program this fall. She joined the Early Detection Group May 2015 to assist with a feasibility study evaluating the potential success of an online platform for the collection of patient reported outcomes. In addition, she assists the Pain and Symptom Management Clinic with a study evaluating resources for advanced care planning and also, she helped implement a new provincial data tracking system for BCCA Clinical Trials. In her free time, she enjoys traveling with family, baking and spending time outdoors.

Kevin Eger

  • Patient Satisfaction with Breast Cancer Surgical Treatments

Kevin is entering his fourth year at UBCO in Honours Computer Science. His experience primarily stands in full-stack web development, but he has worked with a collection of the newest development technologies out there. His honours thesis will study analyzing large data sets with in-memory databases. He maintains a very active lifestyle and has immersed himself in music and design.All in all, Kevin is a computer science student, fitness enthusiast and proud geek.

Nolan Hunka

B.Sc. Physics (Honours), UBCO 2016

  • Development of Ultra-High Resolution CT for Differential Diagnosis of Lung Nodules Found Using Low Dose CT

Graduating in 2016, Nolan has completed his B.Sc. in physics, including an honors thesis on nanopore force spectroscopy. Aspiring to one day practice medicine, he is passionate about philosophical development, experiencing the great outdoors, and growing a mustache. Living in the beautiful Okanagan Valley has provided him an excellent outlet for activities such as ski patrolling, alpine touring, hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. On three separate occasions Nolan has swam across Lake Okanagan to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society (and because it was there).
