• Lung Cancer Database

Courtney will be entering her fourth and final year at UBC Okanagan in September. She has no past research experience, however this project has inspired her to do further research in the future. Working on the Lung Cancer Database in conjunction with the Interior Health Thoracic Surgical Group was a great experience for her and she hopes to continue her research next summer. In her spare time, she enjoys jogging, reading, and playing with her dog Coco. She is interested in the field of surgery, potentially transplant or orthopaedic, and is fascinated by the internal workings of the human body. Courtney plans to enrol in the MD program at UBC in the fall of 2014 after graduating with her BSc. in June 2014.

Michelle completed her Bachelor of Science at UBC in Computer Science and Biology, and was subsequently accepted into the UBC Faculty of Medicine at the Southern Medical Program (SMP) in Kelowna. Despite studying medicine now, she hopes to continue learning in the computer science field. She jumped at the opportunity to combine her medical and technical experiences at the BCCA. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and trying new foods.

Stephen was the recipient of the 2013 CBCF Wine, Women and Woods Studentship. Stephen’s main areas of research include medical image processing, parallel algorithms and CUDA-accelerated hardware applications. When not working, Stephen is often hiking, camping, playing ultimate, or cheering on the Canucks.

Kelowna born and raised, Breanne received her BSc in Microbiology with Honours from UBC Okanagan. She started working in the Early Detection lab with the support of the B.C. Cancer Foundation Studentship and has continued working on various projects including the development of the Breast Cancer Care Pathway and Microsimulation Model, analyzing wait time data in lung cancer surgery, as well as cleaning and organizing data for the Dashboard. Breanne loves to travel, enjoy new cultures, meet new people, and try new foods. Breanne has been accepted to UBC Faculty of Medicine Southern Medical Program in Kelowna and is excited to apply her experiences at the BC Cancer Agency to her future career as a medical doctor.

2014 – 2015

After finishing her degree in 2013, Brittany returned home to Kelowna to complete a year of Psychology at UBC Okanagan while working in a health psychology lab. In July 2014, she was then hired on as the research intern for the PREDICT project at the BC Cancer Agency. This project is a biobanking and permission-to-contact initiative which supports global cancer research, and is sponsored by the BC Cancer Foundation. 

Her pastimes include travelling and spending time outside, mainly hiking and swimming. She also plans on pursuing a career in medicine.

• Lung Cancer Database

Christine graduated from UBCO in April 2014 with a degree in Biology. With the support of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Student Summer Research Program, Christine joined the Early Detection Group in the summer of 2014 to work on extracting time to care and pathology data for the development of a lung cancer surgical outcomes database.

• Patient-Linac Collision Detection Tool for Radiation Therapy

Duncan has completed his Bachelor’s Degree with Honours in Computer Science at UBC Okanagan. He took a Medical Imaging course taught by Dr. Rasika Rajapakshe and Dr. Cynthia Araujo in his third year and in the summer of 2014 began working in the Early Detection lab. Duncan has worked alongside radaition therapists and planners to create collision detection software to prevent collisions between the radiation treatment machine and patients, and his honors thesis focused on the visualization of breast cancer outcomes in BC. Outside of work Duncan enjoys many sports, including soccer and surfing when he visits his home town in Hawaii, and playing guitar.

• Patient-Linac Collision Detection Tool for Radiation Therapy

Eric is a 4th year Computer Science and Math student at UBCO. Before studying at UBCO he completed an Electronic Engineering Technology diploma. He joined the Early Detection group in 2016 and is working alongside radiation therapists and planners to improve and distribute a collection of external beam radiation treatment planning software. Outside of work Eric enjoys beach volleyball, thinkin’ bout nothing, edible cricket farming, web development, volunteering, and petting cute dogs

• Development of Ultra-High Resolution CT for Differential Diagnosis of Lung Nodules Found Using Low Dose CT

Marc completed his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree at Simon Fraser University in 2014, with a joint major in Psychology. He began studies as a medical student in the MD program at UBC’s Southern Medical Program in Kelowna, BC in September 2014, and joined the BCCA in the summer of 2014. He is currently involved in a project involving the development of ultra-high Resolution CT for the differential diagnosis of lung nodules. In his spare time, he enjoys remaining active and enjoying the beautiful Kelowna scenery by hiking, running, and doing anything he can outdoors.

2014 – 2015

Samantha was hired at the BCCA to initiate two projects: BioLym (Biology of Lymphoid Cancer) and TTR (Tumour Tissue Repository). BioLym was successfully launched in August 2014. TTR is still currently under construction. These projects are tumour bio-banking initiatives that give patients the opportunity to participate in cancer research by donating their tumour tissue and a blood samples.

Outside the office, Samantha enjoys yoga, dance, golf, and downhill skiing. One day she hopes to graduate form medical school and start her own practice, maybe even as an oncologist!
