Hazel Chen

Hazel grew up in Nanjing, China, and came to Canada in 2021 for university. She studies Computer Science at UBC and received a Work-Learn position to work on the mammography data curation and image cataloging pipeline in the group. She is interested in the intersection of computer algorithms, machine learning, and optimization. Outsides of school and work, she enjoys hiking and classical music.

Ravi Bullock

  • Development of a Prognostication Model for Breast Cancer using Radiomics 

Ravi was born and raised in Jamaica. He enjoys studying many areas of science, particularly real-world applications of mathematics and computer science. He took Dr. Rajapakshe’s medical imaging class at UBCO and gained an interest in working in the medical field. He received FoM SSRP funding to work on a radiomics project to detect breast cancer in mammograms. In his free time, he enjoys going to the gym and playing video games.

Bailey Borden

  • A Machine Learning Approach to CT Organ Segmentation for QA

Bailey is a Master’s student in the Medical Physics program at UBC Okanagan. Prior to Joining the Early Detection Group, Bailey attended the University of Northern British Columbia where he researched the use of machine learning algorithms to manipulate quantum systems. Bailey Joined the Early detection group to be able to continue building a knowledge of AI, while also being able to work on projects that have the potential to help people. Currently he is working on a Breast AI project which will auto segment CT scans with the goal of this project to develop a tool that may in the future aid in the breast cancer treatment workflow.

Garway Tammy Ng

  • Siamese neural network for early detection of breast cancer using longitudinal screening mammograms

Prior to joining the Early Detection Lab, Tammy was previously involved in HIV bioinformatics research building programs simulating viral evolution in London, Ontario. She was accepted to the UBC Southern Medical Program (SMP) in Kelowna and turned her focus towards machine learning applications in medical imaging. She received a Summer Studentship Research Program scholarship to start a project with the Early Detection team. In her free time, Tammy enjoys gardening, hiking, and being out on the water on a paddleboard.

Jasmine Hung

MSc. Computer Science

  • Medical Image matching using AI for record linkage

Jasmine is entering her final year in her master’s degree at UBCO, and hopefully will graduate next June. She obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Information Science from Taiwan in 2022, and she came to Canada and joined the Early Detection Research Group right after.  Throughout her past academic and research pursuit, she discovered her interest in AI and machine learning, with a particular focus on the application in the medical field. Knowing the potential of the technologies, she expects the state-of-an-art AI could contribute to human healthcare. Beyond her academic passion, Jasmine is an outdoorsy person. She is into lots of activities, including golfing, hiking, hitting the gym in her free time.

Mizuki Shindoh

Originally from Sendai, Japan, Mizuki is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science at UBC Vancouver. Her enthusiasm lies in Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing and Software Engineering, and she is driven to leverage these fields to bring positive, ethical, and sustainable changes in society. Mizuki’s academic and professional experiences have led her to a profound interest in the potential of AI technologies in various fields, including Healthcare, to support essential aspects of people’s lives.

Beyond the realm of technology, Mizuki finds joy and inspiration in the world of art. She especially enjoys playing musical instruments and practicing brush calligraphy.

Suki (Yufei) is a 4th-year student majoring in Computer Science combined Statistics. A fun fact about her is that she has long hair which is more than 1-meter long.

Dr. Hua Shen

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Natural Sciences Program, University of Calgary

Biostatistician

Dr. Hua Shen is an assistant professor of biostatistics at the University of Calgary. Her research interests are on the methodology development and statistical analysis of data arising from public health and medical research. They include the analysis of survival data, recurrent events data, longitudinal data, incomplete data and other complex data involving multiple outcomes, misclassification/measurement error, hierarchical structures and high dimension. She is strongly interested in collaborative research to support investigations in cancer and other chronic diseases.

Emily Mayzes

I am going to be going into the last year of my undergraduate degree this upcoming year and will be graduating in April with my Bachelors in Science with a major in Psychology and minor in Computer Science. I have always been interested in working in the medical field, and after I graduate I hope to continue on to medical school. Currently, I am working on the project entitled ‘Exception handling in Deep Learning application in breast cancer detection using mammography’. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, baking, and exploring the beautiful Okanagan on hikes and bike rides.
